decide what they’d like to do.

Carers for Animals - Galway SPCA
Tasks: Looking after animals that are
mostly cruelty cases. Volunteers are required to look after our dogs and other animals in our sanctuary in Heathlawn. Tasks
include cleaning, feeding, walking, cuddling, playing with our animals.

Extra Information: The society provides a range of
services which include running an emergency animal shelter, providing advice,
information and assistance to the general public on all issues regarding
animals, responding to all reported road traffic accidents involving animals,
providing an animal rescue service, and running educational workshops for young
people. The animal shelter cares for sick and injured and very young animals
who are abandoned or whose owner is unknown, with the purpose of re-homing. The
advice work involves giving the general public advice and information with
regard to the proper care of animals, providing financial assistance, issuing
discount vouchers towards veterinary costs and placing animals in kind, loving
homes. The animal rescue service involves coming to the aid of all animals,
domestic and wild, and fowl who are reported to us as being in distress. 1,200
schoolchildren took part in our education workshops last year.

The role of the volunteer is to enhance social and leisure opportunities of our

Activities can include going for walks, bowling, social pint, arts &
crafts, sports, or assisting in programmes which are ongoing at various
services.
All potential volunteers must complete an application form which requires the
name of two referees. A Garda Clearance form is also part of the screening
process and is attached to the application. Our HR Department looks after
obtaining both personal references and Garda Clearance.
Every effort is made to ensure the volunteer placement is enjoyable and beneficial
to both volunteer and our service users. Volunteers are supported in their role
and will become part of a network of volunteers who meet on a regular basis.
Due to the vulnerability of our service users, becoming a volunteer with
Ability West can be slow compared to other organizations due to screening and
training, however, most volunteers find that it has been worth the wait!

IT Trainers for Older People- Age Action Ireland
Tasks:
Encourage and help older people to learn basic IT tasks (turn computer
on/off; use the mouse; keyboard; search the internet; send and receive
email) over a 6-8 week period in resource centres, libraries, day
centres and other host facilities. The IT trainer may start off working
with another volunteer trainer and a trainer's guide will be provided.
Courses are normally run for 6-8 weeks in the morning or afternoon for
1 ½ -2 hours. Some facilities host in the evening time, with a tea
break where possible. One-off / periodical training for mobile phone
usage also requires trainers.
