Laura – Galway Migrant Service
Laura ‘It’s a really rewarding experience…you get to make a difference to people’s lives’

Laura, a recent NUI graduate, volunteered as an English Conversation Class Facilitator with Galway Migrant Service last summer. Working with a diverse group of people from varied cultural backgrounds and levels of English was a whole new experience for Laura.

She told me that she soon found working as a volunteer in this role really opened her eyes to different groups of people living in Galway, whom she would not have normally been in contact with. Students in her class came from areas including The Congo, Iraq and Kosovo.

Laura began by assisting the teacher with the classes on a weekly basis. After a short time she soon took on more responsibility and was helping to prepare and plan the classes every week. Such an enjoyable experience of teaching has inspired Laura to think about it as a career and she is now planning on doing a HDip next year which, she hopes, will eventually lead to Special Needs teaching.

Asked what she feels is the most rewarding thing about volunteering Laura says, ‘It’s a really rewarding experience…you get to make a difference to people’s lives.’

Laura has now also started volunteering in a Befriending role with the Brothers of Charity.
