Frank – Galway Visually Impaired Activities Club
Frank ‘People tell me about the kick they get out of it…they can feel the breeze on their face and smell the sea air…it’s great to hear’

Frank attended an information morning on volunteering in 2007 and registered with the centre soon after. Cycling has always been a keen interest of Frank’s so the opportunity to volunteer as a tandem pilot for the Galway Visually Impaired Activities Club really appealed to him, and after a bit of practice he soon got used to riding a tandem bicycle.

Since then Frank has gone cycling regularly with the group in all weathers on their fortnightly outings, which take place all over the county including routes in Connemara, Oranmore and Salthill.

Frank told me how the members really enjoy the chance to get out and go for a cycle. Many have not been on a bike for a long time, if ever, and all are delighted with the opportunity to get out, have some fun and feel safe at all times.

‘People tell me how they can feel the breeze on their faces and smell the sea air…they get a real sense of independence from it… there is social aspect for members too’ , says Frank.

Frank plans to continue volunteering with the club while also playing music on a voluntary basis from time to time with the elderly which he also very much enjoys.
